Earthquake expert issues warning for that province: The ground is very poor, a major earthquake is expected

While tremors of various magnitudes occur every day in Turkey, an earthquake-prone country, citizens continue to follow the warnings of earthquake experts.

Japanese earthquake expert Yoshinori Moriwaki spoke to members of the press in Afyonkarahisar and issued important warnings.

Stating that an earthquake of magnitude 7.5, like those in Kahramanmaraş and the Marmara Region, is not expected in Afyonkarahisar, Moriwaki pointed to the weakness of the soil and stated that even a magnitude 6 earthquake could cause serious damage in the region.

"ALLUVIAL SOIL IS VERY POOR"

The earthquake expert issued warnings by pointing out that there are 4 fault lines within the city of Afyonkarahisar.

"We came to Afyon on December 28 last year. After that, unfortunately, the East Anatolian fault line rupture event began," said Moriwaki. "Of course, I haven't researched Afyonkarahisar much since then, but naturally, earthquakes could occur in Afyonkarahisar within that year as well. There are fault lines in Afyonkarahisar, and there are 4 fault lines within the city. The alluvial soil is very poor, and there are fault lines, so we shouldn't build very high-rise buildings. The mayor has already made a decision to allow up to 3 floors, which is very good. In some places, it can be done; for example, slightly taller buildings can be built for TOKİ sites," he said.

MAGNITUDE 7.5 EARTHQUAKE WARNING

The earthquake expert emphasized that buildings should be constructed under control by examining the drilling structure and soil composition.

Stating that more than 50 percent of buildings in Turkey are generally illegal, Moriwaki issued a warning for a magnitude 7.5 earthquake and said the following:

"Buildings should be constructed under control by looking at the drilling structure and soil composition; in fact, it should have been checked after 1998 whether there was a permit and whether the soil was good or bad. In general, the soil is poor, so I do not expect a very large earthquake here, like the earthquake in Kahramanmaraş or the earthquake in the Marmara Region, such as a 7 or 7.5. But unfortunately, because the soil is poor, one must be careful, as an earthquake did occur in 2002 even though it generally reaches 6."

"WE MUST ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR AN EARTHQUAKE"

"People should not ask about the time and magnitude of an earthquake," said Moriwaki, underlining that an earthquake is coming to Turkey and emphasizing that people must be constantly prepared for an earthquake.

Stating that people should not forget about earthquakes, the expert said, "An earthquake is coming to Turkey and Japan, so we must be prepared. We must be together in the municipality, at home, at the company, and in schools; then we can reduce this damage by 70 percent. 70 percent is a large figure, so we need to broadcast about these things together; even if an earthquake is not coming, people might forget, so it is necessary to report on it and not let it be forgotten."
