Extraordinary requests from citizens to the Turkish Parliament Petition Commission: 'Make the dollar the official currency', 'Revoke the parliamentary seat of those who resign'
Approximately 15 thousand applications have been made to the Turkish Parliament (TBMM) Petition Commission in the last 1.5 years. Among the applications were interesting requests such as banning the use of 'older brother' and 'older sister' honorifics outside of the family, and lifting the mandatory beard-shaving requirement for market employees. On the other hand, it was also requested that the parliamentary seat of a deputy who resigns from their party be revoked.

The TBMM Petition Commission, which evaluates the wishes and complaints of citizens, received approximately 15 thousand applications between May 15, 2023, and January 17, 2025.
A citizen applying from İzmir made suggestions such as banning words of Arabic origin, preventing individuals under the age of 40 from enrolling in open education high schools, banning smoking in public areas, and removing certain mobile applications. They also requested that the use of the terms 'abi' and 'abla' outside of the family be prohibited.
Another petitioner submitted suggestions for improving the annual leave rights of public workers, imposing penalties on companies that do not apply mandatory discounts for the disabled, and granting administrative leave to disabled employees during Disability Week.
"GRANT EDUCATION LEAVE TO STUDENTS"
Among the applications made to the commission were requests such as granting education leave to working students so they can continue their formal education, reducing the weekly working hours for women, and providing transportation and travel assistance for the return of Syrian refugees to their countries.
"MAKE THE DOLLAR THE OFFICIAL CURRENCY"
Some petitions requested that the official currency be changed to the dollar or euro, that all provinces be granted metropolitan status, that the mandatory beard-shaving requirement for market employees be lifted, that street weddings be banned, and that tourist visits to the continent of Antarctica be organized.
"I HELPED, GIVE ME A CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION"
The following notable requests were also among the applications:
- Imposing deterrent penalties for physical attacks against people inside vehicles
- Extending the one-time SCT (Special Consumption Tax) exemption right granted to the relatives of martyrs to veterans as well.
- Making a regulation to regain the right to paid military service, stating that the right was lost because the fee was not paid on time after applying.
- Preventing individuals from appointing a relative as their lawyer.
- Placing a cap on house rents
- Providing early retirement for civil servants with disabled children.
- Abolishing the production and use of coins.
- Stopping the implementation of QR codes
- Revoking the parliamentary seat of a deputy who resigns from their party.
A citizen applying from the Turhal district of Tokat requested to be given a certificate of appreciation for helping the injured in a traffic accident.
