Istanbul, one of Turkey's largest metropolises, has long been facing the threat of an expected major earthquake. Earthquake experts state that a large amount of energy has accumulated in the section of the North Anatolian Fault in the Sea of Marmara and that it will inevitably break one day.

Japanese earthquake expert Yoshinori Moriwaki stated that energy has accumulated in the points of the North Anatolian Fault that have not broken for a long time, and issued a major earthquake warning for Istanbul and its surroundings. Moriwaki emphasized that the risk is high, especially in areas with soft soil on the European side and some coastal strips on the Anatolian side.

Speaking to a YouTube channel, Moriwaki stated that the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) is one of the world's largest fault lines, noting that the fault line starts in Indonesia and extends to Nepal, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Greece, and Spain.
Pointing out that the largest earthquakes in Turkey have occurred on the NAF, Moriwaki expressed that the probability of a major earthquake is high in the regions on the northern and southern branches of the fault line that have not broken for a long time.
"Generally, earthquakes over 7 occur every 200-250 years. However, this period cannot be determined by an exact mathematical calculation. A calculation can be made with a margin of plus or minus 15-20 years. Accordingly, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake could occur in Istanbul within the next 15 years," said Moriwaki, adding that this could be one of Turkey's largest earthquakes.
WHICH DISTRICTS ON THE EUROPEAN SIDE ARE AT RISK?
Emphasizing that the soil structure is a determining factor when evaluating Istanbul's earthquake risk, Moriwaki stated that some regions on the European side carry serious risks.
"The problematic places are areas with soft soil. Especially the districts along the coast from Atatürk Airport towards the west are at higher risk. Zeytinburnu, Ataköy, Küçükçekmece, Büyükçekmece, and especially Avcılar are very risky. Although there was no major damage across Istanbul in the 1999 earthquake, many buildings collapsed in Avcılar. This shows that the soil structure is not earthquake-resistant," he stated.
Moriwaki noted that the risk is lower in regions such as Beşiktaş, Şişli, and İstinye.
WHICH REGIONS ON THE ANATOLIAN SIDE ARE IN DANGER?
Emphasizing that some coastal regions on the Anatolian side also carry risks, Moriwaki said that the coastal areas of Tuzla, Pendik, and Kartal are particularly dangerous.
"The fault line passes close to the sea in Tuzla, so the risk is higher in the coastal sections. The seaside of Pendik and Kartal are similarly at risk," said Moriwaki, noting that the risk is lower in regions moving north, such as Ataşehir and Kadıköy.
