Cemil Önal, who was alleged to have been in charge of the financial affairs of Cypriot businessman Halil Falyalı for a period, lost his life as a result of an armed attack in the Netherlands on Thursday, May 1.
It was stated that Önal was targeted following the statements he made to the Northern Cyprus media.
“TAPE” ALLEGATIONS SHOOK THE AGENDA
Speaking to the Bugün Kıbrıs newspaper between April 14-16, Cemil Önal claimed that while Halil Falyalı was alive, he had prepared 45 blackmail tapes belonging to certain politicians and bureaucrats.
Önal alleged that certain figures from Turkey had made attempts to obtain these tapes.
REACTIONS AND DENIALS FROM POLITICIANS
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel addressed these allegations in his statements, while successive denials came from the government side. While the Ministry of Foreign Affairs argued that the allegations were “completely untrue,” the Center for Combating Disinformation under the Presidency's Directorate of Communications also told the public, “do not give credence to baseless allegations.”
At the same time, former Minister of Interior Süleyman Soylu had also clearly denied the allegations.
