CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, speaking at the "Defending the National Will" rally held recently in Istanbul's Bahçelievler district, said that U.S. President Donald Trump's son, Donald John Trump Jr., met with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Istanbul. Özel raised allegations that business deals were made during the meeting.
In his remarks, Özel used harsh language, stating, "While Palestine is bleeding, they are doing business with Trump's son through lobbying firms. They are abandoning Palestine and our brothers in Palestine, leaving them to Trump."
The claims regarding the meeting were confirmed by sources close to the government. However, the sources provided a different explanation regarding the content of the meeting, maintaining that it was merely a "courtesy visit." A Turkish official told Deutsche Welle that the meeting did not touch upon Gaza or any concrete issues.
Donald Trump Jr. serves as an executive vice president at The Trump Organization but does not hold any official government position. Trump Jr. visited Istanbul in 2016; during that visit, he came for hunting purposes and held meetings regarding joint investments at Trump Towers Istanbul.
WHAT TOPICS WERE DISCUSSED IN THE MEETING?
While no concrete statement has been made regarding the content of the meeting between Erdoğan and Trump Jr. in Istanbul, information obtained from Erdoğan's inner circle suggests that the meeting took place solely within the framework of a courtesy visit.
