The additional pay given to those who work on official and religious holidays is called holiday overtime. It is calculated as double the daily wage of the employees.
The daily wage of a worker who works on a holiday is found by dividing their gross salary by 30, and this figure is multiplied by two to determine the holiday overtime pay.
HOW MUCH IS THE 2025 HOLIDAY OVERTIME PAY?
The gross minimum wage for 2025 has been set at 26,005 TL. Accordingly:
Daily gross wage: 866.85 TL
A worker who works on a holiday receives 866.85 TL in overtime pay in addition to their normal salary.
Total holiday overtime pay for a worker who works for 3.5 days: 3,033 TL
WHAT HAPPENS IF HOLIDAY OVERTIME FALLS ON A WEEKEND?
If a holiday falls on a weekend, the overtime pay increases to 2.5 times the daily rate.
Daily overtime pay: 1,300 TL
Since the eve of the 2025 Ramadan Feast falls on a Saturday and the first day of the feast falls on a Sunday, a worker who works on the weekend will be paid an additional 1,950 TL.
In total, a worker who works for the 3.5-day holiday period will receive 3,683 TL in additional overtime pay.
IS IT MANDATORY TO WORK ON HOLIDAYS?
According to the Labor Law, employers cannot force their employees to work on holidays. However, if there is a provision in the employment contract regarding working on holidays, the employee may be required to comply with the employer's request.
CAN TIME OFF BE USED INSTEAD OF HOLIDAY OVERTIME PAY?
If the employee wishes, they can receive the overtime pay, or they can choose to use time off instead. However, this depends on the agreement between the employer and the employee.
DOES A WORKER WHO WORKS FOR 1 HOUR ON A HOLIDAY RECEIVE A FULL DAY'S WAGE?
If an employer has an employee work for even just 1 hour on a holiday, they are required to pay a full day's wage.
