In the city where winter temperatures drop to minus 30 degrees Celsius at night, Metropolitan Municipality teams are making preparations in advance due to the ground freezing during the "harsh winter."

Work was carried out to ensure that there are no problems with burial procedures in the city, which experiences severe winter conditions.

In this context, officials from the Metropolitan Municipality Cemetery Branch Directorate opened 500 grave sites at the Asri and Abdurrahman Gazi cemeteries so that those who lose their loved ones do not face difficulties in winter.

The workers, who opened the grave sites with the support of construction machinery, then carried out finishing work in these areas using compressors, pickaxes, and shovels.

Cemetery Branch Directorate official Abdullah Demir told reporters that he has been involved in digging graves for 11 years.

Speaking about the difficulties of the harsh winter conditions in the city, Demir said, "Because winter conditions are severe in Erzurum, we prepare the graves early so that our burials can be conducted comfortably despite the freezing."

"When it snows in winter, we clear the snow from inside the graves. That way, our citizens are not inconvenienced," he said.

Explaining that they take precautions against the ground freezing, Demir said, "The excavator digs, and we shape the burial chamber with pickaxes and shovels. When it snows, we clean the inside, and it is ready; we don't face any difficulties."

"There has never been a situation where the graves we prepared in winter were insufficient. The graves we prepare are enough throughout the winter."

"We don't have any trouble until summer; otherwise, if we don't dig in the summer, it is impossible to dig. Our goal is for our public not to be inconvenienced," he added.
