TWO MAJOR AFTERSHOCKS OCCURRED

According to the Kandilli Observatory report, two significant aftershocks with a magnitude of 5.2 occurred in the region following the initial major earthquake. The intensity of the aftershocks was observed particularly in a 15-20 kilometer area between the Central Marmara and Kumburgaz segments.

Kandilli Observatory indicated that the acceleration records captured during the earthquake were examined and that the spectral acceleration values to which structures were exposed remained well below the design spectrum used as a basis in earthquake regulations. This situation was evaluated as an indication that structures generally sustained less damage.
