Following the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, the Kanal İstanbul project has regained momentum. The remaining agricultural lands and wetlands are facing the threat of concrete development. While a 12,000-residence project is already rising in Sazlıdere, one of Istanbul's most important water sources, eyes have now turned to the Baklalı neighborhood of Arnavutköy.

TOKİ PUT LANDS UP FOR SALE

According to a report by Cengiz Karagöz from Halk TV, Emlak Yönetim, affiliated with TOKİ, has put four agricultural plots totaling 65,649 square meters in the Baklalı neighborhood up for sale. A price of 172 million TL has been set for these properties, which are classified as "Unplanned Areas." These areas were registered as agricultural land in the 1/100,000 Environmental Plan.

According to three separate EIA applications submitted to the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, it is planned to build 12,092 more residences in the region.

Baklalı, located on the Kanal İstanbul route, had previously come to the agenda with the purchase of 44 decares of land by Sheikha Moza, the mother of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. With the new plans prepared by the Ministry of Environment, Moza's land has been opened for development.

According to the new zoning regulations, the land has been converted into a tourism and commercial zone where business, shopping and management centers, hotels, motels, offices, restaurants, bazaars, shops, banks, and financial institutions can be built.

The land purchased by the company in which Sheikha Moza is a partner is designated for health tourism in the new city plans. According to the plans, hotels, shopping centers, and social areas can be built for patients coming to Istanbul for treatment and their companions.

STARTED BUYING LAND IN 2018

Sheikha Moza established Triple M Gayrimenkul Turizm Ticaret Anonim Şirketi on November 8, 2018, with a capital of 100,000 liras. Just 1.5 months after the company's establishment, it purchased 44,702 square meters of land located on the Kanal İstanbul route.

ERDOĞAN: "CAN SHE NOT BUY?"

The revelation that the mother of the Emir of Qatar had purchased land on the Kanal İstanbul route had sparked a major controversy. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had used the following expressions in response to the criticisms:

"The mother of the Emir of Qatar coming and buying a place here, etc... One should ask the people who say this; what support did she receive from the state to buy such a place? I have heard these rumors. Is there any legal obstacle to the mother of the Emir of Qatar purchasing real estate from our country?"
