Meteorology updated its forecast: When will it snow in Istanbul?

The General Directorate of Meteorology (MGM) has shared its weather forecasts for the first week of the new year. While no precipitation is expected across the country, partly cloudy weather will prevail in the inner and eastern parts, while clear and less cloudy weather will dominate other regions. However, icing and frost events are among the points where caution is required, especially in transportation.

No significant change is expected in air temperatures. However, temperatures are estimated to increase by 2 to 4 degrees in the Black Sea coastal areas and the Inner Aegean. In other regions, temperatures will continue to hover around seasonal norms. This situation indicates that mild weather will continue, especially during the winter months.

AVALANCHE RISK IN EASTERN ANATOLIA AND EASTERN BLACK SEA

Meteorology has issued a warning against the danger of avalanches on the high and steep slopes of Eastern Anatolia, as well as in the high inner parts of the Eastern Black Sea region. Icing and frost events are also expected in these regions. Citizens have been asked to be cautious against potential disruptions in transportation.

RAINY WEATHER IS COMING ON THE WEEKEND

According to Meteorology's 5-day forecast, a rainy weather wave will enter the country starting from the weekend. While showers are expected in Istanbul, Izmir, and their surroundings on Saturday, snowfall will be effective in the eastern parts on Sunday and Monday. Snowfall, especially in the eastern provinces, may cause disruptions in transportation.

WHEN WILL IT SNOW IN ISTANBUL?

Ahmet Köse, the 2nd President of the Chamber of Meteorological Engineers, gave a date for snowfall in Istanbul in his statement. According to Köse, no rain is expected in the first week of January. However, precipitation will return with a cold air wave coming from the Balkans starting from January 7. Köse stated that they estimate Istanbul could receive 15 days of snowfall this year between mid-January and the end of February.
