Following President Erdoğan's statement upon his return from the NATO Summit that "It is not just Istanbul, other provinces are also a disaster," a comprehensive operation was launched against the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality. The investigation is being conducted under the coordination of the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office Bureau of Terror and Organized Crimes and the Bureau of Organized Crimes.
With the operation carried out in the morning hours, arrest warrants were issued for 157 people, including former İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Tunç Soyer and CHP İzmir Provincial Chair Şenol Aslanoğlu. Following these decisions, 130 people have been detained so far.
DETENTIONS OF HIGH-LEVEL MUNICIPAL OFFICIALS
Within the scope of the operation, numerous department heads and high-level executives of the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality were also detained. Some of the names detained are as follows:
Heads of the Department of Science Affairs: Özgür Ozan Yılmaz, Sercan Kahya, Murat Varlıorpak
Head of the Construction Tenders Department: Şule Kök Yıldırım
Head of the Procurement Department: Övünç Özgen
Head of the Machinery Supply and Maintenance Department: Murat Koçak
Apart from these, engineers and technicians serving on various commissions, control officers, chiefs, and head drivers are also on the detention list.
Former İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Tunç Soyer made his first statement after being detained via social media through his lawyer. He used the following expressions in his statement:
“Dear friends, unfortunately, I am addressing you from detention through my lawyer daughter. I have no sorrow other than the sadness of my loved ones and those who love me. Rest assured that my conscience is clear, my head is held high, and we have done nothing that would make you bow your heads in shame.
I wish my bureaucrat colleagues, whom I am proud of, and their families well, and I ask them to stand tall and be patient. No matter what you do, the shadow of the darkness you are trying to grow in Turkey will not fall on İzmir. Our struggle will continue to grow stronger.”
IT TURNED OUT THAT A PERSON WITH AN ARREST WARRANT WAS DECEASED
One name on the operation list drew attention. Yunus Öz, from the Bozköy neighborhood of Torbalı, lost his life on April 23, 2024, after being crushed under a tractor in an accident on his field. However, it was seen that an arrest warrant had also been issued for Yunus Öz in the operation carried out yesterday.
