‘Photochemical smog’ danger in major cities: Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen issues warning with specific dates

Meteorology expert Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen made statements regarding the weather forecast on his social media account.

While heavy rain is expected in many cities, including Istanbul, as of today, snowfall will be effective in and around Ankara.

Şen pointed out that weather conditions in the coming days could create serious environmental problems.

He stated that "photochemical smog" will form in the morning hours in cities with heavy vehicle traffic. In regions of Anatolia where coal is used for heating, sulfur dioxide pollution will increase.

Prof. Dr. Şen emphasized in his statements that a windless atmosphere will form under the influence of high pressure, and this situation will lower air quality.

"Pollutants will not disperse due to the windless weather and will accumulate," said Şen, calling on those living in major cities to be careful. It is stated that air quality will deteriorate further starting from the weekend due to the effect of high pressure.

"In the coming days, "photochemical smog" pollution will form in the mornings in provinces with a high number of vehicles, and sulfur dioxide pollution will increase in regions in Anatolia where coal is burned. High pressure creates a windless environment, so pollutants cannot disperse and are increasing.

Air quality will decline starting from the weekend due to the effect of high pressure. Lodos (southwesterly winds) can cause stove poisoning. If you add coal to a burning stove, ignite it from the top as well. Carbon monoxide is a very poisonous and insidious gas."
