Yunus Emre Geçti, who was taken into custody for motorcycle theft in Ümraniye, Istanbul, and had 26 separate criminal records, escaped from the police station on September 22.

Police officers K.H.S. and Şeyda Yılmaz, who took action to stop the fleeing suspect, caught Geçti in a short time. However, the attacker took the police officers' weapon and opened fire on those around him.

As a result of the gunfire, police officer Şeyda Yılmaz was seriously injured and, despite all interventions at the hospital where she was taken, could not be saved and was martyred. In the incident, police officer K.H.S. and the attacker's mother, Pınar Geçti, were also injured.

AGGRAVATED LIFE SENTENCE FROM THE COURT

Following the incident that plunged Turkey into mourning, Yunus Emre Geçti was taken into custody and sent to prison by the court for the crime of "intentional killing of a public official due to their duty."

After the trial process was completed, the court sentenced the defendant to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of "intentional killing of an on-duty officer" against police officer Şeyda Yılmaz.

In addition, he was sentenced to a total of 26 years and 9 months in prison for the crimes of "attempted intentional killing of an on-duty officer" against police officer K.H.S., injuring his mother, and "resisting to prevent the performance of duty."

In the reasoned decision announced by the court, it was stated that the defendant, Yunus Emre Geçti, opened fire on the police officers with the pistol he had seized until the bullets ran out.

In the decision, while it was emphasized that police officer Şeyda Yılmaz was martyred as a result of this attack, it was clearly stated that the defendant committed the crime of intentional killing in order to avoid being caught.
