The prison sentence and political ban handed down in the "idiot" case, in which Ekrem İmamoğlu is being tried, have been upheld by the Istanbul Regional Court of Justice. While it is stated that the decision will be taken to the Court of Cassation, whether or not a political ban will be imposed on İmamoğlu has become one of the primary issues defining the political agenda.
UPHOLDING DECISION FROM THE APPELLATE COURT
The Istanbul Regional Court of Justice found the sentence given to Ekrem İmamoğlu for insulting members of the Supreme Election Council (YSK) to be in accordance with the law. Thus, the sentence of 2 years, 7 months, and 15 days in prison and the deprivation of rights including a "political ban" under Article 53 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) for İmamoğlu has been finalized.
However, the court re-evaluated the sentence due to a calculation error and corrected it to 1 year, 19 months, and 15 days without holding a hearing. The Court of Cassation will make the final decision on the case.
WHO WILL BE THE CHP'S CANDIDATE?
Following the decision, the question of "If İmamoğlu receives a political ban, who will be the CHP's candidate?" has been brought to the agenda.
"İMAMOĞLU CAN BE A CANDIDATE THE MOMENT THE COURT OF CASSATION OVERTURNS IT"
Speaking on the Medya Kritik program on TGRT Haber, former AKP deputy Şamil Tayyar reminded that if the Court of Cassation overturns the decision, İmamoğlu could be a candidate, stating, "The decision cannot be interpreted as 'İmamoğlu cannot be a candidate.' The moment the Court of Cassation overturns it, İmamoğlu can be a candidate."
"YAVAŞ IS THE STRONGEST POTENTIAL CANDIDATE"
Tayyar also drew attention to the possibility of the Court of Cassation upholding the decision, stating, "When İmamoğlu is not in the picture, Yavaş is the strongest potential candidate."
"ÖZGÜR ÖZEL WILL BE THE CANDIDATE" CLAIM
TGRT Haber Ankara Representative Fatih Atik pointed to a different scenario, commenting, "The CHP will start talking about its new candidate. The next candidate will be Özgür Özel." Atik argued that a new era has begun on the main opposition front.
Özel had previously stated in his remarks that he would not be a presidential candidate if İmamoğlu's candidacy were to be blocked.
"IMM INVESTIGATION COULD TAKE YEARS"
Cem Küçük, a columnist for the pro-government Türkiye newspaper, stated that the only obstacle to İmamoğlu's candidacy is the fake diploma investigation.
Küçük assessed, "Other than the diploma, there is no obstacle to Mr. Ekrem's candidacy. The IMM investigation will take 3.5 years at best to conclude."
