The investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into the actions of Semih Çelik (19), who brutally murdered 19-year-old Ayşenur Halil in Eyüpsultan, Istanbul, and 19-year-old İkbal Uzuner at the Fatih Edirnekapı Walls before jumping from the walls to commit suicide, is ongoing.
While the investigation into the incident continues, Semih Çelik's father and sister have applied to the Istanbul Civil Court of First Instance to change their 'Çelik' surname.
"BECAUSE OF THE ÇELİK SURNAME, WE HAVE BEGUN TO FACE A GREAT REACTION AMONG THE PUBLIC"
In the petition submitted to the court, it was stated, "We are the family of Semih Çelik, who was involved in the incident that took place in Fatih and Eyüpsultan.
Until the incident in question occurred, we had no problems with bearing the 'Çelik' surname; however, with the incident, a great public outcry has emerged, and we have begun to face a great reaction among the public against the 'Çelik' surname.
Using and bearing the Çelik surname has become unbearable for us. This surname has created a situation that endangers our safety and has caused widespread public outrage.
We request that our surname be changed so that we can continue the rest of our lives without encountering a vital danger and without being subjected to threats by the public.
We want this change to be registered in the population records," the statements included.
