Journalist Hakan Tosun was attacked by two individuals whose identities were determined on the night connecting October 10 to October 11 in the Mehmet Akif neighborhood of Istanbul's Esenyurt district. According to police records, the attack occurred at 00:35. Tosun was taken to the hospital with severe injuries as a result of the blows he received.
However, it took until 02:52 for information about the incident to reach the Esenyurt Mevlana Police Station. The two-hour delay has sparked debate regarding the conduct of the investigation.
POLICE SUMMONED BY PHONE INSTEAD OF CUSTODY
According to a report by Eylem Nazlıer from Evrensel newspaper, a noteworthy procedure was followed regarding Abdurrahman Murat, born in 2007, and Adnan Şahin, born in 2001, who are alleged to have been involved in the attack.
It is alleged that the police called the suspects by phone and summoned them to give statements instead of taking them into custody.
In his statement, Abdurrahman Murat said, "The police called me in the afternoon of October 11. They summoned me to the police station and informed me about the incident. I came to the police station myself."
According to official records, Murat's statement was taken at 21:56, and the statement of the other suspect, Adnan Şahin, was taken at 01:26 on October 12.
CONTRADICTIONS EMERGED IN WITNESS TESTIMONIES
Following the incident, two neighborhood residents were heard as witnesses. One of the witnesses stated that Adnan Şahin attacked Hakan Tosun with "flying kicks and punches," while the other said he only struck him once.
In contrast, Adnan Şahin denied the allegations, saying, "I did not throw any kicks or punches." The witnesses also stated that Abdurrahman Murat punched Tosun once.
The perpetrators denied the crime, claiming that Tosun had been beaten elsewhere.
Another striking detail in the investigation was the political connections of Adnan Şahin's lawyer, Turan Susuz.
At Susuz's wedding, Deputy Minister of Treasury and Finance Mahmut Gürcan, AKP MP Şamil Ayrım, and Esenyurt District Governor Vural Karagül served as wedding witnesses.
It was also learned that Turan Susuz is the brother of AKP Esenyurt District Board Member Sıraç Susuz and serves as the acting head of the Esenyurt Red Crescent branch.
