Earthquakes continue to occur one after another in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir. Tremors in the region persist following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred on August 10, which resulted in the loss of one life.

Another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 occurred in Sındırgı last night. The tremor was felt in many surrounding provinces, including Istanbul. Following the 4.8 magnitude earthquake, a total of 7 earthquakes were recorded, the largest being 4.2 and 4.3.

While the activity in Sındırgı has caused concern, an assessment came from Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy. Participating in a Habertürk broadcast, Üşümezsoy indicated that the tremors in the region would continue in their normal course, while drawing attention to another fault line.

Reminding of the fault in Simav, Üşümezsoy stated that there could be an earthquake risk of 6.5 and noted the following:

“Although aftershocks continue after the earthquake in Sındırgı, this is natural and does not mean that a new major earthquake will occur. However, the Simav fault zone carries the potential for a major earthquake in the long term due to its geological structure.”

EARTHQUAKE RISK IN SİMAV

Üşümezsoy explained that it is not possible for this earthquake to be triggered by Sındırgı and that it would be a fault capable of acting independently, with the following words:

"There was an earthquake in Simav in 2011. The fault plane on Mount Simav is very active. The rupture in Simav was insufficient. The fault plane remains. I was there when the earthquake happened in 2011. In the east, Mount Simav could rupture in the long term. There is such a potential in Simav. It is not an event that will be triggered by Sındırgı; it is Simav's own energy. There is such stress in the coming period. The fault length in Simav is 40 kilometers. It could rupture in two separate fault segments."
