New details have emerged in the investigation into the poisoning incident in Fatih that resulted in the deaths of the four-member Böcek family. It has been determined that the company that performed the pest control at the hotel, which is alleged to have caused the death of the family who came to Istanbul from Germany for a vacation, was also involved in a similar case in the past.
While mother Çiğdem Böcek and her two children from the Böcek family, who were staying at a hotel in Fatih, lost their lives following the incident, father Servet Böcek also passed away yesterday at the hospital where he was receiving treatment. The investigation was expanded following the loss of the entire family.
Four of the 11 suspects detained in connection with the deaths were arrested by the court to which they were referred after their procedures at the police station. It was stated that proceedings regarding the other suspects are ongoing.
While it was initially evaluated that the family members might have been poisoned by food they consumed in Ortaköy, suspicions shifted to other possibilities within the hotel after another tourist staying at the same hotel also fell ill.
In the investigation conducted by the Homicide Bureau teams, it was understood that pest control for bedbugs had been carried out in a room on the ground floor of the hotel. The investigation focused on the possibility that the pesticide containing "aluminum phosphide" may have leaked into the room where the Böcek family was staying through the ventilation shaft in the bathroom.
THE SAME COMPANY WAS ALSO INVOLVED IN A PAST INCIDENT
The new information that emerged today in the investigation was striking. According to journalist Dilek Yaman Demir, it was determined that one of the employees of the company that sprayed the hotel was also involved in a poisoning incident that occurred previously at a Quran course in Fatih.
It was learned that a child was poisoned and hospitalized following the pest control carried out at the Quran course. The investigation determined that a product called Fumigas 57 TB, which contains "aluminum phosphide," was used as part of the fight against bedbugs.
In the investigation conducted regarding the employee in question, it was revealed that although they held a biocidal product applicator certificate, they were not working at any authorized business. It was determined that the pest control was carried out without authorization.
It was noted that an administrative fine was imposed on the suspect within the scope of the Regulation on the Procedures and Principles for the Use of Biocidal Products.
