Sındırgı shaken again this morning: Ahmet Ercan comments on the earthquake swarm in Balıkesir! Is a destructive earthquake expected?

Activity continues in the region following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir, which resulted in the loss of 1 life.

Numerous tremors have been recorded with their epicenter in Sındırgı. Earthquakes reaching magnitudes of up to 4.5 are causing panic in the region.

Most recently, another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 occurred early this morning.

As anxiety in the region continues to rise, all eyes have turned to the assessments of experts.

Seismologist Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan shared a post on his social media account titled "What is happening in Sındırgı?" Evaluating the earthquake swarm in Sındırgı, Ercan stated the following:

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN SINDIRGI?

Following the Sındırgı earthquake, which had a destructive power of magnitude M6.1, aftershocks have continued incessantly, reaching magnitudes of M4.5-5.

The aftershocks are concentrated within an area surrounded by Demirci, Gölmarmara, Akhisar, Kırkağaç, Gelenbe, Balıkesir, and Dursunbey, with a northwest length of 35 km and a northeast width of 25 km, centered on Sındırgı, generally trending east-west and northwest-southeast.

The focal depth of the earthquakes is concentrated between 12 and 15 km, as if a swarm of tremors is continuing. This situation indicates that the tension in this region was not released by the main M6.1 earthquake and that secondary aftershocks will continue for a long time. However, the public is very uneasy and rushes into the streets at the slightest tremor.

Nevertheless, I do not expect a destructive earthquake in this region. The aftershocks appear to continue for another 1-2 months before they begin to subside.
