The forest fire that began on July 26, 2025, in the Gürsu district of Bursa was fought for two days to be brought under control. Approximately 100 hectares of forest land were reduced to ash in the fire, which affected three villages, primarily Karahıdır Neighborhood. The flames were brought under control as a result of firefighting efforts involving 1,800 personnel and 700 pieces of heavy machinery from 41 institutions.

A total of 1,765 people from 485 households in the region were evacuated due to the fire. After the danger passed, the villagers returned to their homes.

THE ONLY GARDEN THAT REMAINED GREEN INSIDE THE BURNT FOREST

As life returned to normal, a striking detail emerged during inspections of the fire area. A nectarine orchard located right in the middle of the forest was virtually unaffected, while all the surrounding area had turned to ash.

It was observed that the 25-decare orchard, located within the borders of Karahıdır Neighborhood and registered under the 2B category, owned by Halil Kiraz, remained lush green. While even the soil around it was covered in gray ash, the fruit trees remained standing intact with nectarines still on them.

KEPT IT CONSTANTLY MOIST, LEFT NO WEEDS

53-year-old Halil Kiraz, who says he protects his garden like the apple of his eye, expressed that the scene he saw when he arrived at his garden after the fire caused both astonishment and joy. Kiraz, a father of three, explained his method of protecting his garden with these words:

“When I arrived after the fire was extinguished, I saw that this place had not burned. I constantly irrigate with a drip system. I completely clear the weeds from under the trees. While everywhere else turned to ash, my garden remained standing tall. Not even the slightest spark could cause damage. I surrounded my garden with a path. These precautions really worked.”

Stating that only the irrigation pipes were damaged in the fire, Halil Kiraz expressed that the loss he experienced was not significant for him, saying the following:

“As long as we are alive, it is enough that our village was saved. I do not want to see that scene again. We must have had a prayer answered. My advice to our farmers is: do not leave dry weeds around the trees, create open spaces around them. If necessary, let there be a few fewer trees, but let the rest be saved.”
