Unbelievable incident in Istanbul: Died in March, reappeared in July! Grave opened, truth revealed

An incredible incident occurred in Istanbul. 60-year-old homeless man Erol T. was taken into custody by police on February 17 last year for disturbing the peace. Erol T., who stated that he had consumed cologne while in custody, fell ill and was taken to the hospital. Erol T.'s health condition was serious while he was under treatment. At that moment, his family was informed that the man had passed away.

LAID TO REST WITH A CEREMONY

The prosecutor's office launched an investigation following the incident, which was recorded as alcohol poisoning. The fact that Erol T. had returned to the streets after his treatment remained a detail that no one noticed. His brother, Erdoğan T., who was called to the Council of Forensic Medicine, identified the body shown to him. He mistook the deformed face of the body for his brother's. Trusting the doctor's explanation of "changes due to waiting" and the police's identity verification, Erdoğan T. took the body to his hometown and buried it with a ceremony.

REAPPEARED AT THE POLICE STATION FIVE MONTHS LATER

The shocking truth came to light months later. Erol T., whose statement was sought as part of a counterfeit alcohol investigation conducted by the Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, went to the Kadıköy Hasanpaşa Police Station in July to give a statement. Stating that he drinks alcohol constantly, Erol T. said, "I was drinking at Kurbağalıdere. I don't remember what happened. I stayed in the hospital for a month. I have no complaints against anyone."

GRAVE OPENED, THE TRUTH REVEALED

Upon realizing that Erol T. was alive, the prosecutor's office contacted his brother, Erdoğan T., who had previously made the identification. Erdoğan T. stated that he had been convinced the person he identified was his brother, noting that the face was unrecognizable. He said he had trusted the statements of the forensic experts and the police.

Following this development, the grave where Erol T. was thought to be buried was opened. As a result of the examination, it was confirmed that the person lying in the grave was not Erol T. The truth revealed that another homeless person, whose identity could not be determined after death, had been buried under the mistaken belief that he was Erol T.

After the astonishing incident, the prosecutor's office deepened the investigation into both the death caused by counterfeit alcohol and the identity mix-up. While Erol T.'s statement was taken again as a victim, efforts were initiated to identify the person who was buried by mistake.
