WAS LÜTFÜ SAVAŞ EXPELLED?
Former Hatay Mayor Lütfü Savaş has been expelled from the Republican People's Party (CHP). In a post on his social media account, Savaş accused his party of "seeking political rent from terrorism" and stated the following:
"Today's CHP is busy getting 'DEM-ified.' Whoever establishes ties with terrorism or tries to obtain political rent from terrorism, we cannot defend them."
Following this post, Savaş, who was referred to the disciplinary board with a request for "final expulsion," was expelled from his party as of today.
WHO IS LÜTFÜ SAVAŞ?
Lütfü Savaş, born on March 23, 1965, in Antakya, is an Assoc. Prof. Dr. who spent his childhood and youth in the Havuzlar neighborhood of Antakya. He graduated from the Anadolu University Faculty of Medicine in 1990. He served as a doctor in various provinces of Turkey.
He took part in the establishment of the Mustafa Kemal University Faculty of Medicine. He served as deputy chief physician during the integration of the former state hospital into Mustafa Kemal University and the opening of the research hospital. He became an associate professor in 2007. He served as a Rector's Advisor at Mustafa Kemal University between 2006 and 2008.
Defining himself as having a nationalist line, Savaş left his position at the Mustafa Kemal University Faculty of Medicine during the 2009 Turkish local elections to become the AK Party's candidate for Mayor of Antakya and won the election with 47.3% of the vote. During his tenure, he provided many services, most notably the cleaning of the Asi River. However, he left the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) after the party nominated Minister of Justice Sadullah Ergin as its candidate for Hatay Metropolitan Municipality Mayor in the 2014 Turkish local elections.
Upon the request of CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and despite many opposing views within the party, he was nominated as the CHP's candidate for Hatay Metropolitan Municipality Mayor in the 2014 Turkish local elections, based on his mother's suggestions and his view that nationalism is one of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's 6 principles. He was elected as Hatay's first Metropolitan Mayor with 41% of the vote.
Lütfü Savaş, the incumbent Mayor of Hatay, became the CHP's candidate for Hatay Metropolitan Municipality Mayor again in the March 31, 2019, local elections.
