The Republican People's Party's (CHP) decision to determine its presidential candidate through a primary election has sparked a new debate on the political agenda.
The differing statements made by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and Ankara Metropolitan Municipality (ABB) Mayor Mansur Yavaş, who are prominent figures for the candidacy, regarding candidate determination and the primary election have drawn attention.
ABB Mayor Yavaş made the following statement regarding the primary election his party will hold to determine its presidential candidate: "I am of the opinion that it is too early to determine a candidate. The election date is not yet clear. Conditions will change by then. I believe that as long as there is economic hardship, society should not be preoccupied with this. I think candidates should not exhaust each other's energy."
IMM Mayor İmamoğlu, who fully supports the primary election, responded to Yavaş's remarks on the primary and candidacy by saying, "Our esteemed mayor Mansur Yavaş may have a different view, but we will still discuss these. These are intra-party matters. We will find the most correct path. We have to define a process where all our hands are raised together."
In a press conference he held on February 7, Yavaş closed the doors to candidacy discussions. Emphasizing that the country's real agenda is the economy, Yavaş stated, "For 5 years, they debated who the candidate would be. Now I think they are debating it on purpose. Our priority is the economy, and if you want to change the government, the first thing to do is to take care of these poor people and change the government that way."
At the end of the meeting, when asked by a journalist, "It is also said that the CHP aims to announce a candidate to prevent further debate. What do you think about these issues?", Yavaş replied, "We will stand by our retirees and minimum wage earners until the end."
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel will meet with ABB Mayor Yavaş and IMM Mayor İmamoğlu in Ankara today before the Party Assembly (PM) meeting where the primary election decision will be taken. It is expected that objections regarding the primary election decision will be addressed and a middle ground will be sought during the meeting.
If the Party Assembly decides to hold a primary election despite the objections, it has become a matter of curiosity whether Mansur Yavaş will participate in the election.
According to the report by Gazete Duvar, many politicians stated that Yavaş would not find it appropriate to enter a primary election in which only CHP members would participate, assessing that, "Mr. Yavaş may want to show his influence not by entering the election, but by not entering. He continues to gather strength by staying off-stage. Not all members can vote in a primary election either. Every vote not cast counts for Mr. Mansur. The next 3 years are pregnant with many things."
