Will Syrians in Turkey return to their home country? '8 out of every 10 Syrians...'

With the fall of the Assad regime, the debate continues over whether Syrian refugees will return to their country.

Journalist Fatih Altaylı covered the results of a survey conducted by Betimar Research on this topic in his column.

According to the research, 94 percent of Syrians in Turkey believe that President Erdoğan has looked after them. Meanwhile, 51.2 percent of those who participated in the survey believe that Erdoğan played a role in the overthrow of Assad.

'PEACE WILL BE ESTABLISHED BUT THERE IS UNCERTAINTY'

In the survey, the rate of those who said, "The war is over, but what will happen next is uncertain," was 62.3 percent. The rate of those who trust HTS leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani was measured at 31.9 percent.

To the question, "Will an environment of peace and security be established in Syria?" 84.6 percent answered "Yes." However, to the question, "Are you thinking of returning to your country?" only 32.4 percent said "Yes," while 39 percent said "Maybe in the future."

Evaluating the survey results, Altaylı commented, "As I have been saying for years, there is rarely a return in cases of stays exceeding 5 years. This survey also shows that at least 80 percent of Syrians will remain in Turkey."

Trust in the transitional government is at a high level. 72.8 percent of Syrians say, "The transitional government can build a democratic Syria."

However, the uncertainties regarding the return continue to increase the rate of Syrians staying in Turkey.

SOME SYRIANS HAD RETURNED TO THEIR COUNTRIES

Following the overthrow of the Assad regime in Syria, some Syrians in Turkey had begun to make voluntary returns across the border. Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya had stated that an average of 1,100 to 1,150 Syrians were making voluntary returns daily.
