Former TBMM Speaker Bülent Arınç made statements regarding the current agenda during a program he attended.
Speaking to Hasan Basri Akdemir, Arınç recounted his visit to the hospital for Beylikdüzü Mayor Murat Çalık, who was arrested during operations targeting the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) and has lost 21 kilograms in prison.
Stating regarding Çalık's condition that "His condition is critical, they are trying to treat him. He must be released," Arınç said, "Due to the rules, I could not meet with him. His mother was granted permission to see him while wearing a mask. I spoke with the doctors; his condition is critical, they are trying to treat him."
On Arınç's agenda was a harsh reaction to the report published by the reactionary Yeni Akit regarding Murat Çalık's health status, titled "Fit as a fiddle."
Arınç stated the following:
"There is a shameless newspaper, devoid of morality. They ran a headline saying 'Murat Çalık is fit as a fiddle.' He is not fit as a fiddle. Have some shame, fear God. I feel like praying: may you also be as 'fit as a fiddle' as he is."
Touching upon the role of the Council of Forensic Medicine, Arınç said, "The Council of Forensic Medicine decides on the postponement of sentences for convicts whose sentences have been finalized. Murat Çalık is only a detainee; there isn't even an indictment yet. What does the forensic medicine council have to do with this?"
Reiterating his call for release, Arınç said, "A judge or a prosecutor can make this release decision. There is no need for any reason. As a legal expert, I am saying that this man must be released."
