He escaped prison and killed his wife: Killer says he bought the gun from a butcher for 13 thousand liras

Şafak Saydam, who escaped from the open prison in Erzurum where he was serving a sentence, went to the house of his uncle and father-in-law, Şener Saydam (67), in the Yunusemre neighborhood of the Palandöken district, where his wife was staying, around noon on February 19.

Saydam, who suffers from COPD, asked his wife not to open the door and requested that his brother Turan Saydam—who is also his son-in-law's father—and his son Alay be notified. Claiming that he did not have any gun or knife on him by lifting his clothes, Şafak Saydam stated that he only wanted to talk to his wife and reconcile. Upon this, the family let Şafak Saydam inside. Şafak Saydam began talking to Elif Saydam, who had left him and taken their 4 children with her. Meanwhile, Turan Saydam and his son Alay also arrived at the house.

'HE PULLED OUT THE GUN AND FIRED WHILE NO ONE WAS IN THE ROOM'

According to the report by DHA, Şafak Saydam, who was arguing with his wife Elif in the room, pulled out the gun and fired two shots while no one else was present. Elif Saydam, who was wounded in the head and hand, was rushed to the hospital by those in the house. Şafak Saydam, who fled the house, was caught by the police in the taxi he was using to escape. Elif Saydam, who was treated in the intensive care unit of Atatürk University Research Hospital, passed away a week later and was laid to rest amidst the tears of her loved ones.

The detained defendants Şafak Saydam and his brother Alay Saydam, who is alleged to have incited him, appeared before the judge for the first time at the Erzurum 3rd High Criminal Court, where a lawsuit was filed against them with a demand for aggravated life imprisonment.

'I ESCAPED FROM THE OPEN PRISON AND WENT TO THE HOUSE WHERE MY WIFE WAS'

Saydam, who gave his statement via SEGBİS from the prison in Diyarbakır, said, "Elif and I had been married for 15 years. We were happy and had 4 children. But in recent years, my wife would often run away from home and go to her father's house. Actually, we had a very good life. When she went to her father's house, she always treated me badly. She had taken my children and gone to her father's house again. I went to prison for a crime. After a while, I escaped from the open prison where I was staying. I went to the house where my wife was.

'I BOUGHT THE GUN FROM A BUTCHER FOR 13 THOUSAND LIRAS'

They chased me away every time. My only wish was to reconcile with my wife, and every time I went, I would go shopping and buy chocolates or flowers. On the day of the incident, I told my mother-in-law that I did not have any gun or cutting tool on me and went inside. While I was talking to Elif in the room, she was insulting me and slapping me. Then she wanted to take the gun from my waist. The gun went off while I was trying to prevent her; I fired one shot randomly as I was leaving the house, and then I left. Neither my brother nor anyone else gave me the gun. I bought the gun from a butcher for 13 thousand liras," he stated.

'I COULD NOT PROTECT MY DAUGHTER FROM THEM'

COPD patient Şener Saydam attended the hearing with an oxygen tank, just as he did at his daughter's funeral. Stating that he is very sad because he could not protect his daughter, Saydam said, "No matter what I did, I could not protect my daughter from them. They sell drugs, use them, and engage in all kinds of filth. For Şafak, who came to our door, I told my wife, 'Do not let him in, call my brother and my nephews so they can come and take him away.' But he convinced my wife and got inside. While my daughter and Şafak were talking in the room, my brother, that is, Şafak's father Turan Saydam, and his son Alay Saydam came to our house at that time. Şafak did not have a gun on him when he entered the house; I think his brother Alay gave him the gun to kill my daughter. I am filing a complaint against my brother and his children," he said.
