Comedian Deniz Göktaş's stand-up show titled "Ölü Deniz," which he released on his YouTube channel on June 24, has exceeded 10 million views. It had also drawn attention that the approximately 90-minute show was shared for free with the monetization feature disabled.
The show was recorded at the Harbiye Cemil Topuzlu Open-Air Theater on June 1. The video, which reached wide audiences shortly after being published, surpassed 1 million views in its first few days and reached 7 million views by its sixth day. Following the investigation and arrest process, the view count exceeded 10 million.
INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED REGARDING THE SHOW
Citing certain statements made during the show, an investigation was launched against Deniz Göktaş, first for "publicly insulting the religious values adopted by a section of the public," and subsequently for "insulting the President."
Upon the announcement of the investigation decision, Göktaş, who returned to Turkey from abroad, was detained at the airport. After procedures at the police station and the prosecutor's office, the comedian was referred to court and was arrested by the judge on duty.
HE EMPHASIZED HUMOR IN HIS DEFENSE
During his interrogation by the prosecutor, numerous jokes from Göktaş's show were put to him one by one. In his statement, Göktaş rejected the accusations against him, stating that his words were spoken within the context of a stand-up show and for the purpose of humor.
