He had filed a rights violation application: Constitutional Court's decision on Mehmet Baransu

The Constitutional Court has found the application filed by Mehmet Baransu, alleging a violation of rights, to be inadmissible.

Mehmet Baransu, a columnist for the Taraf newspaper who delivered documents, CDs, and audio recordings related to the "Balyoz" (Sledgehammer) operation plan—a plot by FETÖ against the Turkish Armed Forces—to the prosecutor's office in a suitcase on January 30, 2010, and who was later put on trial within the scope of the FETÖ investigation, had filed an individual application to the Constitutional Court in 2021 alleging a violation of his rights.

Baransu had claimed that his right to personal liberty and security was violated due to the failure to provide the guarantees in the 7th and 8th paragraphs of Article 19 of the Constitution, and that his rights to freedom of expression and freedom of the press were violated because his actions within the scope of journalistic activity and freedom of expression were made the subject of an arrest.

The Second Section of the Constitutional Court, which reviewed the application during its agenda meeting on January 10, ruled that Baransu's application was inadmissible.

The reasoning for the decision will be written at a later date.

Baransu had been sentenced to 13 years in prison by the Istanbul 13th High Criminal Court regarding allegations that a plot was set up against some defendants tried in the "Balyoz" case, and to 13 years and 6 months in prison by the Mersin 2nd High Criminal Court for the crime of being a member of an armed terrorist organization.
