The lifeless body of 15-year-old athlete Kağan Ege Baran, who went missing after the canoe carrying 7 athletes and 1 instructor capsized due to strong winds while training on Lake Sapanca in the Serdivan district of Sakarya, has been recovered.

110-PERSON TEAM CONDUCTED EXTENSIVE SEARCH OPERATIONS

Following the incident that occurred yesterday afternoon, AFAD, Gendarmerie Search and Rescue (JAK), fire department, marine police, IHH, Sakarya Search and Rescue Team (SAKE), and police teams from Ankara and Samsun were dispatched to the region. A 110-person rescue team conducted search operations using 11 boats, 4 drones, 2 sonar devices, 33 vehicles, and 1 helicopter.

The teams focused their search efforts on areas identified by the sonar devices. They attempted to locate the young athlete through surface, shoreline, and aerial scans of the lake.

FOUND 1.5 KILOMETERS OFFSHORE

As a result of hours of work, Kağan Ege Baran’s lifeless body was found approximately 1.5 kilometers offshore. Baran’s remains were taken to the Forensic Medicine Morgue at the Sakarya Training and Research Hospital's Korucuk Campus for autopsy procedures.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Canoes carrying 7 athletes and 1 instructor, which had set out onto Lake Sapanca from the Serdivan area, had capsized due to the effect of strong winds. While 6 athletes and the instructor were pulled from the water, the young athlete Kağan Ege Baran went missing in the lake, prompting search and rescue teams in the region to mobilize.
