A kickboxer accused of killing 17-year-old Yusuf Mutlu, with whom he had a feud, by repeatedly punching him in the head during an argument in Sultangazi, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.
SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS IN PRISON
The court initially sentenced the defendant, Zafer Yasin Avcılar, to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of 'intentional killing of a child'. Stating that the crime was committed with probable intent, the panel applied a discretionary reduction and commuted this sentence to 25 years in prison.
''THE CELEBRATORY SLOGANS SHOUTED AFTER THE MURDER WILL ALSO BE A SUBJECT OF JUDICIAL REVIEW''
Speaking after the hearing, the plaintiffs' lawyer, Betül Öztürk, stated, ''In the behavior of the defendant Zafer Yasin Avcılar, who is a professional and licensed kickboxer, there is no remorse after the incident, but rather signs of victory as if he had knocked out Yusuf Mutlu in a boxing ring. The defendant, who had his video calls with his family from prison shared on social media accounts, shouted slogans saying, 'Tell them I'm not in prison, I'm on vacation.' So, are we supposed to tell those who ask where Yusuf's killer is that he is not in prison but on vacation? We will apply for the legal discussion of probable intent during the appellate process. While people from all over Turkey, not just in Sultangazi where the incident took place, are trying to support the grieving family, the celebratory slogans shouted by the defendant after the murder will also be a subject of judicial review,'' she said.
FROM THE INDICTMENT
The indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office stated that 17-year-old Yusuf Mutlu encountered the suspect Zafer Yasin Avcılar (19), with whom he had a prior feud over a girlfriend, while walking on the street with his friends. It was noted that when Mutlu saw suspect Avcılar, he asked if he had beaten his friend, whom he thought had been assaulted on the road, which led to a verbal argument. The indictment recorded that during the argument, suspect Avcılar punched Mutlu and his two accompanying friends, and after Mutlu said, 'Why are you hitting us?', suspect Avcılar saw a weapon at Mutlu's waist. Upon this, the suspect, a licensed kickboxer, punched Mutlu in the head multiple times in rapid succession, causing his death. The indictment requested that the suspect Zafer Yasin Avcılar be sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of 'intentional killing of a child'.
