In Malatya, an earthquake survivor lost 370,000 TL to scammers who posed as police officers.
The incident occurred in the Ataköy neighborhood of the Battalgazi district. 76-year-old Mehmet Kuzucu, who was chatting over tea with friends at an association, received a phone call from scammers posing as police officers who asked if he had lost his ID. After Kuzucu stated that he had lost his ID some time ago, the scammers claimed his bank accounts had been compromised and demanded that he transfer his deposits to an account they would provide. Falling into the scammers' trap, the elderly man went to the bank and transferred a total of 370,000 TL, which included 180,000 TL in DASK insurance payments for his home destroyed in the earthquakes, to the scammers' account.
Realizing later that he had been defrauded, Kuzucu went to the police station to file a complaint, and an investigation into the incident has been launched.
Still in shock from the incident, Kuzucu warned citizens to be careful and vigilant against scammers.
