A passenger named Umut C. (22), traveling on a bus from Mersin to Adıyaman, suddenly attacked the steering wheel while the bus was in motion. A disaster was averted on the 26-passenger bus thanks to the driver's maneuver.

The incident occurred on October 1 at the 50th kilometer of the Mersin-Osmaniye highway. Umut C., who was sitting in the front seat of the intercity bus driven by Hakan Çetintaş traveling from Mersin to Adıyaman, suddenly got up from his seat around 01:00 and attacked the steering wheel. At that moment, driver Çetintaş did not let go of the wheel and steered the bus, which was heading toward a cliff, into the crash barriers.
DRUGS DETECTED IN HIS BLOOD
Meanwhile, with the intervention of passengers who had woken up, Umut C. was removed from the area where the steering wheel was located. Gendarmerie teams arrived following a report and took Umut C. into custody. A check performed at the hospital revealed that there were drugs in Umut C.'s blood. After his procedures at the gendarmerie, Umut C. was referred to the courthouse and released under judicial control. The moments when Umut C. attacked the steering wheel and the driver tried not to let go were captured by the security camera inside the bus.
"I STOPPED THE BUS BY HITTING THE BARRIERS"
Hakan Çetintaş described the moment of the incident, saying, "They brought a passenger just as we were about to depart from the Mersin Bus Terminal for the Adıyaman trip. The passenger was sitting in one of the back seats. This passenger told the assistant, 'I feel nauseous, can I sit in the front?' The assistant moved him to the front so he wouldn't vomit. He was sitting in the seat right behind me, and as we approached Osmaniye, he started yawning and clenching his teeth. I noticed him in the mirror and became suspicious of his movements. Late at night, while we were driving, this person got up and suddenly attacked the steering wheel. I was startled for a moment and looked at the road; I could have gone off the cliff. I didn't let go of the steering wheel and stopped the bus by hitting the barriers. Then the passengers and the assistant friends took this person and handed him over to the gendarmerie. Drugs were found in his blood, but he was released under judicial control. No one even had a nosebleed in the accident, but if I had let go of the steering wheel, it could have been a major disaster," he said.
