In the crisis that began following Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu's return to the head of the party with a decision of absolute nullity within the CHP, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay had resigned from the CHP.
A striking claim regarding Cemil Tugay was made on TGRT Haber, a channel close to the government. Journalist Mustafa Yavuz claimed that Tugay is conducting negotiations to join the AKP.
“HE IS MAKING AN INTENSE EFFORT TO JOIN THE AKP”
Suggesting that Tugay will not be part of CHP leader Özgür Özel's potential new party, Yavuz stated the following:
"Cemil Tugay is currently engaged in intense lobbying and contact to join the Justice and Development Party. Yes, I am stating this as clear information. Cemil Tugay is currently in a state of intense effort or traffic of negotiations to join the Justice and Development Party with the AKP's key figures in İzmir."
“THE TIES HAVE BEEN SEVERED”
Claiming that the relationship between Cemil Tugay and Özgür Özel is strained, Yavuz said, "The relationship between Özgür Özel and Cemil Tugay has already been strained for some time. Both sides are at a point where they could almost say harsh words to each other. In other words, the ties have already been severed. There is definitely no such situation on Cemil Tugay's side where he will be with us when the new party is established, as Özgür Özel has expressed."
HE WAS ABSENT FROM ÖZEL'S İZMİR VISIT
On the other hand, Cemil Tugay was not present during CHP leader Özel's visit to İzmir. When asked, "Is there a problem between you and Cemil Tugay?", Özgür Özel replied, "We have no problem with Mr. Cemil. We are in the CHP; he has now left. He will come when we establish the party. We would not expect Cemil Tugay to come here today anyway. He says, 'I will come there when you establish the party or return to the party.' I respect his opinion, but I do not ask for such a thing from our other mayors."
HE HAD SAID, “IT IS OUT OF THE QUESTION FOR ME TO JOIN THE AKP”
Following his resignation from the CHP, Cemil Tugay had stated, "It is out of the question for me to join the AKP. From now on, I am following the political decisions that Özgür Özel and his staff will make. A new party will be established, and I will be there."
