Hearing on Eylem Tok's extradition postponed: When is the second hearing?

The second hearing, which was scheduled for tomorrow regarding the extradition to Turkey of Eylem Tok, the mother of 17-year-old Timur Cihantimur, who caused the death of Oğuz Murat Aci in a car accident in Istanbul on March 1 while driving without a license, has been postponed. It was stated that the hearing will take place on July 1 at 19:00 TSI (Turkey Standard Time), but no information was provided regarding the reason for the postponement. Eylem Tok will be defended by two different lawyers in the new hearing.

EYLEM TOK'S DETENTION HAD BEEN ORDERED TO CONTINUE

At the first hearing held on June 18 at the John Joseph Moakley Courthouse in Boston, where Tok's extradition to Turkey was discussed, the judge had decided that Tok would remain in custody and that the next hearing would be held on June 27.

TIMUR CİHANTİMUR'S DETENTION CONTINUES

Regarding Timur Cihantimur, who is being tried in the same case as his mother, it was decided in the hearings held on June 18 and 21 that his detention would continue.

The court has not yet made a decision regarding the application for release on bail filed by the lawyers of Timur Cihantimur, who is also a US citizen.

In the documents they submitted to the court, Timur Cihantimur's lawyers claimed that the detention center where Timur Cihantimur is being held is more of a prison than a detention center for children, that Cihantimur's needs for medication and medical intervention are not being met, and that he has been subjected to mistreatment, and they requested that he be released on bail or placed under house arrest.

The date for Timur Cihantimur's next court appearance is not yet clear.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On March 1, at approximately 23:50 in the Eyüpsultan district of Istanbul, 29-year-old Oğuz Murat Aci lost his life and several others were injured when Timur Cihantimur, while driving a luxury car, struck three ATV-type vehicles parked on the side of the road due to a breakdown.

Following the accident, the unlicensed driver Timur Cihantimur was taken by his mother, Eylem Tok, first to Egypt and then to the US. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, which launched an investigation into the incident, issued an arrest warrant for mother Eylem Tok for "harboring a criminal" and for Timur Cihantimur for "causing death and injury by negligence" after it was determined that they had flown from Istanbul to Egypt on March 2 at approximately 03:50, and requested that a red notice be issued for them.

Turkey requested the extradition of the mother and son from the US in May. Timur Cihantimur and Eylem Tok were captured on Friday, June 14, in an operation carried out by police in Boston, USA.
