The hearing was set for tomorrow: Case seeking political ban for İmamoğlu dropped

The case filed against Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is currently detained at Silivri Prison, which included a request for a political ban and is known in the public eye as the "ugly case," has been closed before the first hearing could take place. The court ruled to drop the case after the preliminary payment determined by the court was deposited.

According to a report by Halk TV, an indictment had been accepted following the response of CHP's detained presidential candidate and IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu to remarks made by Beykoz Municipality's AKP Council Member Serkan Şahin, in which he stated, "Continue your ugly politics, you are quite ugly."

THE FIRST HEARING HAD BEEN SCHEDULED

Following the acceptance of the indictment by the Bakırköy 33rd Criminal Court of First Instance, the first hearing of the case had been scheduled for February 27, 2026. However, a new development occurred in the file before the hearing date arrived.

The court ruled to drop the case after the amount determined by the court under preliminary payment provisions was deposited with the relevant authorities within the legal timeframe.

PRISON TIME AND POLITICAL BAN HAD BEEN REQUESTED

In the prepared indictment, it was requested that İmamoğlu be sentenced to between 3 months and 15 days to 2 years and 4 months in prison for the crime of "insult" due to his remarks, and it was also requested that a political ban be imposed on him.

A SIMILAR CASE HAD BEEN CLOSED IN THE PAST

A case had previously been filed against İmamoğlu on the allegation that he insulted two prosecutors who were on duty while he was at the courthouse as part of a "city consensus" investigation on the day he was detained.

The case, which was heard at the Istanbul 27th Criminal Court of First Instance and involved the charge of "insulting a public official due to their duty," was dropped in October after a preliminary payment was made, despite the prosecutor's negative opinion.
