Heartbreaking details in the Kartalkaya fire tragedy: 20 people died by burning, 54 by suffocation, and 4 by jumping from windows

A fire that broke out on the night of January 21 at the Grand Kartal Hotel, one of the prominent winter tourism centers in Bolu, claimed the lives of 78 people.

In the investigation launched by the Bolu Chief Public Prosecutor's Office following the fire, 41 suspects have been detained so far. While 28 suspects were arrested, 9 were later released.

The detention of 19 individuals continues, including hotel owner Halit Ergül, his wife and board member Emine Murtezaoğlu Ergül, their daughters Elif Aras and Ceyda Hacıbekiroğlu, hotel general manager Emir Aras, Provincial Special Administration Secretary General Sırrı Köstereli, Fire Department Chief Kenan Coşkun, and Bolu Deputy Mayor Sedat Gülener.

In the 189-page report prepared by a panel of expert witnesses, it was stated that the fire originated from a "grill plate" device used in the "show" section of the restaurant located on the 4th floor of the hotel.

The indictment regarding the fire tragedy has been completed and sent to the Bolu 1st High Criminal Court. The Bolu Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has filed a lawsuit against 13 people, each facing up to 1,998 years in prison, and against 19 people, each facing up to 22 years and 6 months in prison.

The indictment prepared by the Bolu Chief Public Prosecutor's Office individually specified the causes of death for the 77 people who lost their lives. It was determined that in the tragedy, 54 people died from carbon monoxide poisoning, 4 from falling from a height, and 20 from burning.

THEY WERE FORCED TO JUMP FROM WINDOWS

The indictment states that Dilara Ermanoğlu, Eslem Uyanık, Alican Boduroğlu, and Şevval Şahin, who were forced to jump from windows due to the dense smoke filling their rooms at the time of the fire, died as a result of falling from a height.

20 PEOPLE DIED BY BURNING

It was determined that Kübra Altın, Alya Altın, Sedat Çetiz, Alp Mercan, Yiğit Gençbay, Ela İnal, Defne Tüzgiray, Eray Tüzgiray, Esra Nazik, Seden Nurgül Dayı, Süleyman Dayı, Ela Dayı, Buse Dayı, Yusuf Sinaneddin Gültekin, Bilal Gültekin, Muhammed Selim Gültekin, Zehra Sena Gültekin, Bekir Sadık Gültekin, Sümeyye Güner, and Feray Kanpolat, who were in the rooms reached by the flames and whose identities were confirmed via DNA testing, died by burning.

Furthermore, the indictment submitted to the Bolu 1st High Criminal Court noted that among the 133 people injured in the fire tragedy, 7 were seriously injured due to bone fractures and 3 were receiving treatment in the hospital for severe smoke inhalation.
