His post caused a stir: Yılmaz Güney's family files criminal complaint against Prosecutor Yavuz Engin

While the footage, which surfaced years later, brought controversy with it, Yavuz Engin, known to the public as the prosecutor of the Newborn Gang case, made a striking post about Yılmaz Güney.

Including a Turkish flag emoji and stating, "The Turk's memory must be strong; they must know their friend and foe," Yavuz Engin continued his post with the note, "The person named Yılmaz Güney is a judge-killer. He is an enemy of the state with a terrorist mentality. He is stateless. Do not let your children watch him."

CRIMINAL COMPLAINT FROM YILMAZ GÜNEY'S FAMILY

Following Prosecutor Engin's widely discussed post, the Güney family took action.

According to Sibel Yükler from T24, lawyer Bişar Alınak, on behalf of Yılmaz Güney's family, submitted a petition to the Council of Judges and Prosecutors and the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. The application requested that a swift investigation be opened against Prosecutor Engin on charges of "insulting the memory of a deceased person," "inciting/degrading the public to hatred and hostility," and "misconduct in office," and that a public lawsuit be initiated.

The petition emphasized that Engin's post "went beyond being an expression of opinion; it contained a severe and aggressive violation of personal rights that cannot be protected by law and constituted criminal acts." The text stated, "Yavuz Engin, by acting in a manner clearly contrary to the principles of care, impartiality, and dignity required by his duty and office, has publicly attacked the moral personality and memory of the late artist Yılmaz Güney, and by using the late artist Yılmaz Güney as a tool, has vented the anger he harbored under the guise of an ideology, targeting Kurdish identity through Turkish nationalism."

The petition, which reminded that Prosecutor Engin is a state official exercising public power through judicial authority, stated, "The attitude he displayed is not a war of words or an ordinary post by a public prosecutor; it is a grave scandal that destroys the dignity of the judicial office by acting like a social media troll and abusing the principle of impartiality. The office of the public prosecutor exists not to produce lynchings, label people, create enemies, and organize hatred, but to uphold the law, conduct fair investigations, and protect the trust citizens have in the state. The suspect has turned the weight of this office and the robe he wears in the name of justice into the language of a troll shouting slogans in the arenas of social media; he has lowered the seriousness of the judiciary to the level of engagement hunting."
