Historian Prof. Dr. Feroz Ahmad has passed away

Historian and academic Prof. Dr. Feroz Ahmad (87), known for his significant work on Turkey's political history, the final period of the Ottoman Empire, the Committee of Union and Progress, and the early years of the Republic, has passed away...

After working at universities in the USA, Ahmad retired from the University of Massachusetts and moved to Turkey, where he obtained Turkish citizenship.

Ahmad, who taught for many years at Yeditepe University, was awarded the 'Republic of Turkey Order of Merit' by then-President Abdullah Gül in 2014.

It was reported that Ahmad's funeral will be held today at the Bostancı Kuloğlu Mosque following the afternoon prayer, and he will be laid to rest at the Tuzla Şifa Cemetery.

WHO IS FEROZ AHMAD?

Renowned historian and academic Prof. Dr. Feroz Ahmad was born in Delhi, India, in 1938. After receiving his bachelor's degree from the Department of History at the University of Delhi in 1958, he completed his master's degree in Middle Eastern history at the University of London. There, he completed his doctoral thesis titled “The Committee of Union and Progress in Turkish Politics, 1908-1914” in 1966 under the supervision of the famous historian Bernard Lewis.

Ahmad began his academic career by teaching at the School of International Affairs at Columbia University between 1966 and 1967, and in 1967, he began working as a faculty member in the Department of History at the University of Massachusetts, receiving the title of professor in 1978. He taught at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University between 1980 and 1981.

He conducted research in Turkey with a Fulbright scholarship between 1997 and 1998. After retiring, Ahmad settled in Turkey and taught at the Department of International Relations and Political Science at Yeditepe University.
