Hitler's birthplace to become a police station

The Austrian government has decided to convert the house in the town of Braunau am Inn, where Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, into a police station. The house, located near the German border, carries the risk of being used as a "pilgrimage site" by far-right groups, and the government's decision aims to prevent this.

LEGAL STEP TO "NEUTRALIZE" THE HOUSE

The house, which was expropriated in 2016, has long been in a state of disrepair, and the government plans to take steps to "neutralize" the building. The Ministry of the Interior announced that police officers will move into the building in the second quarter of 2026.

A MEMORIAL "FOR PEACE, FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY"

In front of the house stands a memorial stone inscribed with the words, "For Peace, Freedom and Democracy. Never again fascism. Millions of dead warn." These inscriptions serve as a symbol that ensures the memory of the past Nazi regime and the Holocaust is preserved.

Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938, and the country has often been criticized in the past for not fully acknowledging its responsibility in the Holocaust. During the Nazi era, approximately 65 thousand Austrian Jews were killed, and 130 thousand people were forced into exile.
