Housing and rent take the largest share of household budgets

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) has released its "Household Consumption Expenditure" data for 2025. According to the research results, housing and rent expenditures accounted for the highest share of household spending across Turkey at 29.3 percent. Housing costs were followed by transportation at 20.5 percent and food and non-alcoholic beverages at 17.3 percent.

EXPENDITURE GAP BETWEEN INCOME GROUPS HAS BECOME PRONOUNCED

In the analysis conducted by income status, it was observed that the share allocated to transportation expenditures by households in the highest income group was approximately three times that of those in the lowest income group. While the lowest-income segment was forced to allocate 38.7 percent of its budget to housing and rent and 29.2 percent to food, the share it could allocate to transportation remained at 8.6 percent.

HOUSING BURDEN RISES TO 41 PERCENT IN SINGLE-PERSON HOUSEHOLDS

When viewed by household size, it was observed that housing and rent expenditures accounted for 41 percent of the budget for those living alone. In large households (6+ people), food expenditures took the top spot at 23.7 percent. The data revealed that the share allocated to housing by single-person households is more than one and a half times higher than that of large households.

FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLES ARE THE MOST WASTED

Waste rates in household food consumption were also included in the research. Accordingly, the most wasted food group was fresh fruits and vegetables at 39.7 percent. This group was followed by bread at 32.5 percent and milk and dairy products at 15.1 percent.
