How Engin Altan Düzyatan was selected for the conference has been revealed

Engin Altan Düzyatan will represent Turkey at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) to be held in Azerbaijan.

This decision has been debated on social media for days. The Climate Change Presidency stated that it had no involvement in Düzyatan's representation, saying, "The selected members entirely reflect the preferences of the COP29 Presidency."

NUMEROUS REACTIONS CAME

Engin Altan Düzyatan representing Turkey at the conference was also on the agenda of journalist Fatih Altaylı. Using harsh expressions regarding the subject, Altaylı had said, "Isn't he from the sycophant quota? Look at the surname! This one lies straight and gets up crooked."

A statement regarding the debated issue came from the Climate Change Presidency. In the statement made from the Presidency's social media account, it was stated that Turkey is represented at the official decision-making sessions of COP meetings by an "officially authorized negotiation delegation" within the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and under the coordination of the Climate Change Presidency, with the participation of relevant ministries such as Foreign Affairs, Energy and Natural Resources, Treasury and Finance, Agriculture and Forestry, Industry and Technology, and Trade, on topics such as "greenhouse gas reduction," "adaptation to climate change," and "climate finance."

"THE SELECTED MEMBERS ENTIRELY REFLECT THE PREFERENCES OF THE COP29 PRESIDENCY"

In the statement, which conveyed that an International Advisory Committee (IAC) was established by the COP29 Azerbaijan Presidency in July, the following was noted:

"The committee is informal in nature, is established at the discretion of the COP Presidency, and the committee members are determined unilaterally by the COP Presidency.

The committee, which has no official status, aims to represent the diverse voices of climate advocates from different segments of society such as finance, government, art, academia, entrepreneurship, and civil society, and holds meetings of an advisory nature; we have no involvement in the process of determining the delegation members assembled by the COP29 Presidency for the year 2024.

The selected members entirely reflect the preferences of the COP29 Presidency. As in previous years, our negotiation delegation, which is expert in their subjects and authorized to represent, continues its preparations to follow all official sessions of the conference at COP29, and the process is being carried out under the coordination of the Climate Change Presidency."
