Hakkari Municipality Co-Mayor Sıddık Akış had been detained in Van as part of an investigation conducted by the Hakkari Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
The Ministry of Interior had appointed Hakkari Governor Ali Çelik as a trustee to the municipality.
While reactions to the decision rose from the opposition, another reaction came from HÜDA-PAR, which supported the People's Alliance in the 2023 general elections.
"THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE DISREGARDED"
The statement by HÜDA-PAR Deputy Chairman and Party Spokesperson Serkan Ramanlı regarding the decision is as follows:
“With the current trustee practice, the duties of all members of the municipal council, who were elected by the votes of the people, are terminated due to a crime allegedly committed by the mayor. This is wrong.
When a mayor is removed from office on the grounds of having committed a serious crime, the rest of the council should elect a mayor from among themselves and continue to manage the municipality. No one should be punished for a crime committed by someone else, and the will of the people should not be disregarded.”
