A comprehensive identity verification system for social media platforms is being developed. According to the prepared regulation, users will log in to platforms such as Instagram, X, and Facebook using a verification key to be created via e-Government.

Within the scope of the new system, it is stated that users will be deemed to have consented to sharing their basic information with the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK).

MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS WILL BE ALLOWED

According to the model being worked on, users will be able to open more than one account on the same social media platform. However, each account will need to be defined separately in the e-Government system.

According to the regulation, it is planned that accounts not verified with a Turkish Republic identity number will be closed.

EXPECTED TO BE INCLUDED IN THE JUDICIAL PACKAGE

The prepared regulation is aimed to be enacted within the scope of the 12th Judicial Package. It is stated that the regulation is planned to be submitted to the Presidency of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey before the end of the legislative year.

It is stated that the identity verification system will cover both individual and corporate social media accounts.

Under the new system, it will become mandatory for individual account holders to link their existing accounts to e-Government.

For corporate accounts, it is envisaged that a matching will be made between the company or institution's imprint information and the social media account.

ALL SOCIAL MEDIA MEMBERSHIPS WILL BE VIEWABLE

It is stated that with the prepared system, users will be able to view all their social media memberships via e-Government.

It is noted that judicial authorities will be able to request the identity information of a user in case of suspicion of criminal elements. It is recorded that this information will be provided through the BTK and a match will be made between the username and the real person.

Thus, it is conveyed that the identification of persons subject to investigation will be carried out.

9-MONTH CALENDAR DETERMINED

A 9-month calendar is envisaged for the implementation of the practice.

It is stated that in the first 3-month period, regulation studies and technical infrastructure will be prepared. While it is stated that social media platforms will establish the identity verification system in the second 3-month period, it is conveyed that the integration of users into the system is planned for the final 3-month period.

It is stated that negotiations with representatives of social media platforms regarding the technical infrastructure are ongoing within the scope of the regulation.
