Identity verification requirement coming to social media

Minister Gürlek announced that identity verification will be made mandatory in the legislative work being prepared for social media. If the regulation is implemented, it will not be possible to share content using anonymous accounts or profiles originating from abroad.

Stating that there is serious misinformation on social media, Gürlek argued that judicial processes are being debated on these platforms, creating false perceptions in the public eye.

“Trials are being conducted on social media”

Gürlek stated, “Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation on social media. Trials are being conducted on social media, and verdicts are being handed down. Our judge and prosecutor colleagues are being lynched. However, a judge makes a decision based on the evidence in the file.”

Drawing attention to attempts to target and discredit members of the judiciary, Gürlek expressed that this situation is unacceptable.

Identity verification will be mandatory

Touching upon the regulation currently under preparation, Gürlek said, “If an individual is going to comment or publish content on social media, their identity will definitely be known. They will not be able to do this with fake accounts or fake accounts from abroad.”

It has been learned that within the scope of the new regulation, it is planned to prevent accounts that have not been verified from commenting or publishing content. Gürlek emphasized that the legal responsibility of users whose identities are clear will also begin directly.

The Minister of Justice stated that he attaches importance to the legislative work regarding social media, expressing that the regulation aims to prevent manipulations intended to influence judicial processes.
