CHP announces its plan if the İmamoğlu verdict is upheld: 'We will travel across Anatolia step by step'

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was sentenced to 2 years, 7 months, and 15 days in prison, along with a 4-year political ban, in the case filed against him for allegedly insulting members of the Supreme Election Council (YSK).

The CHP, which is currently awaiting the decision of the Court of Appeals, has clarified the path it will follow during this process. CHP Group Deputy Chairman Gökhan Günaydın made detailed statements on the matter.

Günaydın shared their strategic plans regarding the Supreme Court of Appeals process if the decision is upheld by the Court of Appeals. Stating, "If the decision is upheld, we will work to ensure that this decision does not emerge at the Supreme Court of Appeals. We will travel across Anatolia step by step; no one will dare to push this decision through in the appeal process," Günaydın also emphasized their goal of an early election.

Günaydın further added, "We will bring the country to a state that forces an early election before 2026-2027."

POLITICAL MOVES COMING FROM CHP

Gökhan Günaydın stated that the CHP will conduct a large-scale campaign across Anatolia during this process and that they will mobilize large masses by informing the public about the İmamoğlu verdict. "We will bring this issue to the agenda with millions of citizens. What we will do in the legal and political spheres is clear. We have the power to prove that the government is thinking wrongly," he said.

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT DEBATE

Responding to questions from Sözcü's Saygı Öztürk regarding constitutional amendments, Günaydın clearly laid out the CHP's stance on President Erdoğan's demands for constitutional change.

Günaydın stated, "The AKP has no intention of improving democracy. We should not sit at the table for constitutional amendments with the AKP. They have abused democracy with every change they have made, and they will do this again to extend their own power. It is not possible for the CHP to support this."

Noting that Chairman Özgür Özel has also expressed the same view multiple times, Günaydın said, "It is not sincere to worry about a new constitution without implementing the current Constitution."
