Millions of retirees had their eyes and ears on the pension hike. Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan announced that they had increased the pension by 15.75 percent to 14,469 TL. With the hunger threshold at 21,000 TL and the poverty threshold at 68,000 TL, the announced figure was met with backlash from retirees.
Another reaction to the pension hike came from Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. İmamoğlu said, "We are ashamed on behalf of those who deem a 14,469 TL salary appropriate for retirees. If those who determine these figures went to the market or bazaar just once, they wouldn't do this."
Union of Municipalities of Türkiye (TBB) and IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu used the following expressions in a post on his social media account:
"We are ashamed on behalf of those who deem a 14,469 TL salary appropriate for retirees. If those who determine these figures went to the market or bazaar just once, they wouldn't do this. As the IMM, we will continue to stand by our retirees, minimum wage earners, and low-income citizens. The IMM's budget is the people's budget."
