Following the local elections he won in 2019, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu faced the 'lame duck' comparison by AKP Chairman and President Erdoğan due to the CHP's inability to secure a majority in the IMM Assembly.

İmamoğlu's advisor Murat Ongun announced the current distribution of IMM Assembly members in a post on his social media account, showing that Erdoğan's comparison is now a thing of the past.

In the local elections held on March 31, 2024, both İmamoğlu and the Republican People's Party (CHP) increased their vote shares and secured a majority in Istanbul.

While the CHP won 26 of Istanbul's 39 districts and the AKP won 13, the distribution in the IMM Assembly also shaped up in favor of the CHP.

İMAMOĞLU IS NO LONGER A 'LAME DUCK'

Murat Ongun, one of İmamoğlu's advisors, announced the new distribution in the IMM Assembly in a post on his social media account as follows:

"According to the results of the March 31, 2024 local elections, the number of IMM Assembly members is as follows:

CHP: 184

AKP: 130

MHP: 2

Best of luck to Istanbul."
