IMM responds to 'İSKİ' allegations: 'Proceeding within the framework of the zoning plan'

The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) has issued a statement to clear up public misunderstandings following İSKİ's decision to demolish housing built for low-income citizens in Arnavutköy. In its statement titled 'Lies and Truths,' the IMM emphasized that the Sazlıdere Dam must be protected.

Lie: İSKİ has made a demolition decision regarding housing built for low-income citizens in Arnavutköy, outside of its jurisdiction.

Truth: The Sazlıdere Dam is an important water source that provides drinking water to Istanbul. The Sazlıdere Dam basin is classified as a protected water source under the İSKİ Drinking Water Basin Protection Regulation. The dam basin is protected in accordance with the provisions of said regulation.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WATER RESOURCES

Pointing out that the Sazlıdere Dam provides approximately 55 million cubic meters of drinking water to Istanbul annually, the IMM stated that if the dam were to be taken out of service, some districts on the European Side could experience water shortages. It was noted that pressure on existing resources would increase, especially as water demand rises during drought periods.

Furthermore, information was provided that the ownership of the Sazlıdere Dam belongs to İSKİ and that annual payments are made to the Ministry of Treasury and Finance. It was emphasized that taking the dam out of use would be a major mistake.

The IMM stated that the projects in question did not receive a positive opinion from İSKİ and do not have permits compliant with zoning legislation, expressing that the protection of water resources is a priority.
