The individual who reacted to prayers being said for Atatürk during Friday prayers in Gayrettepe and insulted both Atatürk and the imam has appeared in court. The court ruled for the continuation of the detention of the individual, who claimed, "I did not mean Atatürk."

A.B., who reacted to prayers being said for Atatürk during Friday prayers in Gayrettepe on November 10, 2023, and insulted Atatürk and the imam who prayed for him in a post on his social media account after leaving the mosque, had been detained in Ümraniye. The individual was arrested for the crime of 'publicly insulting the memory of Atatürk' and sent to prison.
The detained defendant A.B. and the lawyers of the parties were present at the hearing held at the Anatolian 13th Criminal Court of First Instance.
"I DID NOT MEAN ATATÜRK"
In his defense, the detained defendant said, “I got angry and filmed the video when the imam said 'let us read the Quran for his soul' even though there was no Mustafa Kemal Atatürk commemoration in the sermon. I regretted it afterward and closed my account. I know that these insults are not accepted in the Islamic religion either. Islam is based on good morals, so I am very regretful. I request my release and acquittal. When I said infidel, I did not mean Atatürk. The post coinciding with November 10 was not something I planned either.”
DECISION MADE TO CONTINUE DETENTION
The court, which requested that the file be sent to the prosecutor for the preparation of the opinion, ruled for the continuation of the defendant's detention and adjourned the hearing.
FROM THE INDICTMENT
In the indictment prepared by the Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a prison sentence of 1.5 to 4.5 years was requested for the defendant for the crime of 'publicly insulting the memory of Atatürk'.
