The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has announced that Alaa Al-Derawi, a health worker serving in emergency medical situations at the field hospital in Rafah for the Palestine Red Crescent Society, was shot and killed yesterday while on duty.

The ICRC, noting that Alaa was killed while returning from a patient transfer, emphasized that medical personnel must be able to perform their duties safely and drew attention to the widespread violence that civilians in Gaza are living through. Stating that the situation in Gaza should not be accepted as a 'new normal,' the ICRC said, "It is with great sadness that we learn of another health worker from the Palestine RCS being killed while providing life-saving services to people in Gaza." The ICRC had mediated the transfer of 105 hostages from Gaza on December 3, 2023, and transported the hostages to their homes in ambulances.
